What is RSS?
Watch this 3 minute video on Youtube about RSS
RSS (Real Simple Syndication) which is one part of
web 2.0 technology is getting adopted by many
websites. Yahoo, Google, CNN, and several larger
sites have implemented RSS already.
RSS however, by nature, is a techie term and it is
not understood by the average users. It is also not clear to the
regular users that visit your website; how they can
leverage this technology in their normal day to day
internet usage.
What does RSS mean to the average user?
RSS is analogous to a “newsletter”. So when a
website has an RSS feed that their users can
subscribe to, all it means is that they can
subscribe to a newsletter. This subscription is
slightly different than your normal newsletter.
1. There is no fee for subscribing to this “feed” /
newsletter
2. There is no email spam or postal mail that is
sent as part of the subscription.
So for example, when a website sells flowers, they
can make RSS available to their users. This means
that once their users subscribe for this newsletter,
they no longer need to visit that website daily to
see changes. Any new flower that becomes available,
they will know about it right away. Any new
information that is available, they will know about
it right away.
Let’s say a user is looking for a new house in Palo
Alto, California. They know of a website called
realestate.com. Instead of visiting this web site
everyday and seeing what is new, they could just
subscribe to this RSS newletter. RSS would let them
know right away if anything new has come up on the
market.
So how do users get notified when a change has
happened to some website? This is where RSS readers
come in. An RSS reader like Google Reader or
Bloglines or Netvibes is an application that allow
users to subscribe to various websites and get
notified when something has changed on that website.
Users just visit Google reader daily to find out
about changes that happen to hundreds of website in
one place; similar to a giant newsletter that is
comprised of all kinds of information.
